The city still has plenty empty space, so we need to do something to get more people here. Manufacturing should start to pop up, which will really help your economy. Re-zone some of your farms as medium-density industry. Now that it has, we can start to put down industry. Wait for I-M (Industry-Manufacturing) to show positive demand. This will insure that dirty industry will never come, as shown by the negative demand for I-D. To do this, click on the budget, then click on the taxes to open a pop-up. Now that things are underway, hit dirty industry with 20% taxes, the maximum. You will be losing money each month, don't worry about it. Let's start the game.Īs the sims move in, they will start demanding things, such as fire, police, health services. We've also placed an elementary school to get those sims educated right away. Commercial likes traffic, so we put commercial zones along the sides of the avenue, and in a buffer zone between the residential and the industrial. The roads funnel traffic to the main avenue, which can handle much more traffic. Housing value is decreased by traffic, and no one wants their front door to open to a highway. Notice that the residential housing faces the street, not roads. The water pumps are far to the north, drawing pristine water from the forests.ĭetail on the residential/commercial zone. The coal powerplant and landfill is tucked in the corner. The industry currently consists only of agriculture. I've got low-density residential along streets, with medium- and low-density commercial lining the main avenue and roads. There are two main blobs, polluting and non-polluting. With hills and the coast boxing us in, we'll have a main north-south axis. Since our future industrial zone will be to the southwest of here, for continuity's sake we will put our industrial zone in that corner. If you feel like going back to downloading NAM now, I highly encourage it. The plan is subject to change, but this is gives you an idea of the scale you need to be thinking on to get the simcity 4 experience. We'll start in the top right, create a starter city with a balanced mix of residential, commercial, and industrial, and just work our way, down the numbers, to eventually build a mega-city, with residential zones feeding into it, and a industrial zone by the bay. For part 1 of this tutorial, it won't be necessary. It isn't necessary to have a good time, but your ultimate city size will be capped at a lower limit without it. I used the "high capacity" option for this playthrough. NAM version 30, found here is a traffic mod which will make the traffic simulation for SC4 much more realistic. Get Simcity 4 Deluxe, install the NAM version 30 mod (optional). Simcity has a lot of features, I'll only use a few of them. I'll be playing rather deliberately, simply, and slowly. This is demonstration of one way to play SC4, which I hope will be useful to some people. I am no expert in Simcity, I am not claiming that this is the best, fastest, or most efficient way to play. So much fun, that I wanted to share it here with fellow TL players who might be looking to play Simcity 4 (SC4) again, or for the first time. Like many Simcity fans, I was underwhelmed by the new one, which inspired me to dust-off Simcity 4 and play that again.

Its simplistic user-interface lets users clean their contacts list in just few taps & swipes. A simple scan lists all the duplicate contacts in groups, which can easily be reviewed by users before they get rid of them. With this tool, a user can scan and eliminate identical contacts that creates unnecessary confusion and clutter. The way I usually discover this is when I realize that some device does not have some piece of information which was either added or changed on another device. For some reason, iCloud periodically stops working in some non-obvious way. Most of the problems relate to syncing contact data. Well, OK, maybe that's an exaggeration, but I have had plenty of problems with iCloud sync well back into the MobileMe days. There are two kinds of people in the world: those who have no problems with iCloud sync, and people who use iCloud sync. The second half of the album does take its time to reach its full potential, with tracks such as "Cognitive Computations" that are quickly forgotten once the album has ended. But despair not-Allegaeon is technical death metal, after all-the shreddy solos remain. The mood of the album begins to shift with "Proponent for Sentience II - The Algorithm." The idea of sentient robots suddenly becomes a reality for the album, and the riffs take on a more chaotic and destructive nature. Then, the tempo suddenly picks up and Allegaeon's death metal roots become apparent, with heavy, fast riffs and shredderific solos dominating the opening, evident on "All Hail Science." Allegaeon then adds a layer of complexity with a flamenco intro to "Gray Matter Mechanics," followed by the entirely acoustic outro-"Apassionata Ex Machina." After about a minute, the guitars join this symphony with broad power chords that contradict the soft introduction and reveal the epic tone prevalent throughout the album. Or, should I say, to create low expectations that are soon shattered. The album starts out relatively calm with a choral/symphonic introduction to set the mood. While by no means the best album ever, Proponent for Sentience is still a great buy with a high return on investment. But either way, Proponent was the first death metal album I listened to, and it still holds up when compared with my new interests, such as Beyond Creation or Alkaloid. Or maybe those are just two versions of me. Allegaeon's Proponent for Sentience is an EXCELLENT album for anyone from the teenager who just discovered metal to the (also teenager) metal veteran. In conclusion, RNA-associated motifs produced during viral infection bridge the early response with the late adaptive phase, regulating the activation and differentiation of antigen-specific B and T cells, in addition to a short-term impact on innate immunity.ĭuring viral infection, specific T lymphocytes are exposed to foreign epitopes displayed by MHC molecules ( 1), and the B lymphocytes recognize antigens in soluble form ( 2). We also demonstrate the feasibility of using selected RNA motifs as adjuvants in the context of novel aerosol carriers for optimizing the immune response to subunit vaccines. Based on the ability of specific RNA motifs to block tolerance induction and effectively organize the immune defense during viral infection, we conclude that such RNA species are potent danger motifs. Naturally occurring double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) triggered activation of dendritic cells and enhancement of specific immunity, similar to selected synthetic dsRNA motifs. The heterogeneity of RNA-associated motifs results in differential binding to cellular receptors, and specifically impacts the immune profile. This study shows that motifs associated with noncoding RNA are essential features in the immune response reminiscent of viral infection, mediating rapid induction of proinflammatory chemokine expression, recruitment and activation of antigen-presenting cells, modulation of regulatory cytokines, subsequent differentiation of Th1 cells, isotype switching, and stimulation of cross-priming. The adaptive immune response is triggered by recognition of T and B cell epitopes and is influenced by “danger” motifs that act via innate immune receptors. Protect table surfaces with coasters and keep a stack of napkins nearby so sticky fingers don't spot upholstery. "Nothing's more annoying than having to search for a surface in the middle of a big scene," adds Drake. "Make sure there are tables within easy reach of each seat. Drop-leaf accent tables, cubes or nesting tables can be scattered around the room easily. Guests also need places to store refreshments. Place components and DVDs behind closed doors in storage units that complement decor found elsewhere in the room. Balancing the need for dark with safety is important and can be achieved with floorlevel night lights placed in outlets along side walls or low lighting at the back of the room. "I 'gang' lighting so areas can be lit at different times and to ensure no glare or visual discomfort," says Wolf. "And banish the recliners-if the show is that boring, go to bed!" muses Jamie Drake. Prior to guests' arrival, furniture should be repositioned so it faces the TV from a desirable angle. Let some guests lounge on large pillows tossed onto the floor. A large ottoman gives guests a place to rest feet and can double as seating. Slipcovers are an easy and an inexpensive way to protect furniture upholstered in light or neutral fabrics.Īlthough nice if space allows, it's not necessary to provide a traditional chair or sofa for every guest. "Look for fabrics that are practical, yet soft, like leather." Because guests will likely be snacking, pick fabrics treated with a soil protectant so spills aren't fatal attractions. "Upholstery should have a good pitch to support the neck and back," says Vicente Wolf. Surprisingly, many practical picks for media rooms make sense for chic living rooms too, so merging the two worlds may be easier than anticipated. From these experts, here's what you need to know to transform an existing living room into a double-duty media room that's high-tech savvy without sacrificing one ounce of style. To conquer this ongoing battle between the living room and media room, we've tapped into the creative circuitry of Jamie Drake and Vicente Wolf, two stars of the design elite, and Doug Wilson, who's known for his no-nonsense design approach on Trading Spaces A media room on our terms will be a space comfortable enough for a three-hour film and sophisticated enough for entertaining. But as designer Jamie Drake says, "The world's a techno-driven place today and the reality is that we all watch TV or movies at least a little, and maybe a lot." And considering that by the end of 2009, according to a recent survey by the Consumer Electronics Association, 44 percent of homes will have a TV that's at least 40 inches in size-it's time to admit we love entertainment and tame the elephant in the room. Design aficionados would never let a flat screen TV dictate our decor. But she said Ottawa has been using COVID-19 as an opportunity to speed up the transition. Wylie said people were not using that app at a high volume before the pandemic, because it was voluntary and there were easy alternatives. But Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino told reporters in June that while ArriveCan was created for COVID-19, "it has technological capacity beyond that to really shrink the amount of time that is required when you're getting screened at the border."īefore the pandemic, Canada had already started digitizing its border services with other initiatives, including installing customs kiosks at major airports starting in 2017 and introducing an eDeclaration app in 2018, which still exists, to cut down processing times. Australia handles its electronic travel authorizations exclusively via app, while an online authorization form will be required to visit the European Union starting next year.Ĭanadian officials haven't gone so far as to say that they're planning something similar. That's 40 seconds off the average two-minute visit, which the government estimates could "save hours in wait time" if everyone used it.Īre apps the way of the future for air travel?Įlectronic data collection related to COVID-19 has been mandatory at many international borders, and online forms are increasingly being used for non-pandemic reasons. In a statement earlier this month that focused on Canada's broader air travel fiasco, Transport Canada said those who use the forms cut their time at kiosks down by a third. Last week the government said it planned to expand that optional feature to air arrivals in Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Quebec City, Halifax and the Billy Bishop Toronto City airport. At air border crossings, it is now possible, though optional, to use the app to fill out a customs declaration form before arrival at Toronto's Pearson airport, Vancouver or Montreal. Recent government updates to do with the app have focused on efficiencies rather than on public health measures. Bianca Wylie, a partner at Digital Public, questioned why the app would be automating those decisions in the first place, rather than sticking to the information-collection mandate it was launched with. Last month, due to a glitch, ArriveCan instructed about 10,200 travellers to quarantine for 14 days when they didn't have to. But poor data quality still meant that almost 138,000 COVID-19 test results couldn't be matched to incoming travellers, and only 25 per cent of travellers told to quarantine in government-authorized hotels were verified to have stayed in them. Has the app done what it was supposed to do?Ī December 2021 report from the federal auditor general said the ArriveCan app improved the quality of information the government collected on travellers. Refusing to use the app to provide required information can result in a fine of up to $5,000 under the Quarantine Act. The app was introduced early in the pandemic and its use has been mandatory at air and land borders since February 2021 with exceptions in cases of accessibility issues or outages.ĪrriveCan ostensibly screens incoming travellers for COVID-19 and for the last year tracked their vaccination status. Here's a quick lowdown on what we currently know about it. Critics say it has outlived its use, if it ever had one. The government insists it's a useful tool. OTTAWA - The glitch-prone app touted as an efficient border tool early in the pandemic has become a punching bag for critics who question its utility - but ArriveCan may be here to stay. She would turn up on TV over the years, and was always a fan favorite whatever she did. Then she popped up again in 1982 in the films The Swamp Thing, and The Creepshow. I first remember seeing her in the film Escape from New York in 1981, the same year my brothers, and I saw Clash of the Titans. She was the sexy brunette character in a number of late '70s / early '80s movies, and TV shows. I was surprised to discover who performed the role. Although she only existed in the game for a few moments I always thought the performance was one of the best in the franchise. Unfortunately he could not use its powers to reverse the injuries on Alethia, the Oracle of Delphi. With it he could rewind the life of an object, or speed it up, and cause it to decay. Kratos took the Amulet of Uroborus from the lifeless body of Castor. The Oracle survived the fall, but she was living on borrowed time. It was certainly a tough, but memorable battle against the duo. They caused the Oracle to fall to her death. They could also slow down time, and strike Kratos before he could react. When the twins sensed that they were losing the battle they decided to rob Kratos of his goal. They could decay the ground, and cause Kratos to fall to his death. The majority of the twins attacks were not physical but magical. When those weapons were joined Castor used it as a massive walking staff. Each brother actually had their own weapon, a sword, and a mace. Anybody that had seen the movie Total Recall would get the punchline following the battle with the twins. It was grotesque, and awesome at the same time. The more powerful Pollux was sticking out of the side of Castor, just about where his liver would be. What they did instead was make the brothers conjoined twins. That would go against the library of other memorable bosses. It wasn't enough for the art team, and animators to put two separate characters for to battle against. Their age didn't matter as they could use the power of the oracle to make themselves young men. It explained why Theseus was past his prime in GoW II, and why the twins were old in Ascension. The adventures of Jason took place before Kratos became a legendary captain in Sparta. Where they spent half the year on Olympus, and half the year in the fields of Elysium. When he agreed Zeus turned the duo in the constellation Gemini. Zeus agreed so long as Pollux were willing to give up some of his godhood. Castor was mortally wounded in battle, and his brother begged Zeus to make him immortal. His brother Castor had the same mother, but his father was Tyndareus, the King of Sparta. Pollux was a demigod, the son of Zeus, and Queen Leda of Sparta. Their most famous appearance was as Argonauts, traveling with Jason. They had been featured in a few classic mythologies. The brothers Pollux, and Castor were experienced sailors, and renowned horsemen. When I saw the name Castor I instantly knew who they were. They were ordering slaves around in her absence, and having them build tributes to themselves. Once inside the temple Kratos discovers that some unscrupulous twins (labeled the False Profits by the developers) have sequestered the Oracle. There were a lot of enemies leading up to the temple, and an amazing encounter against both a Chimera, and a Manticore. It was certainly a fresh take on stage design. But so did gigantic mechanized snakes that powered the bridge leading to the temple. A frozen breeze gave motion to the environment. Sony Santa Monica decided to set it in the peaks of a mountain. I never imagined what the temple would have looked like, or how one would even reach it. I was grateful for the studio for doing such a deep dive into Greek history. No soothsayer was as famous as the Oracle of Delphi in actual Greek mythology. Then he traveled through the port village of Kirra, in the search of an oracle to guide him. He escaped from a prison made out of a living giant, the hundred armed Hecatonchires. It started with a difficult boss fight, and a prison escape, but it wasn’t just any jail. In God of War Ascension Kratos is on a mission to break his oath to Ares, the god of war. |
